Lesser known Pinterest tricks

Pinterest may be a powerful marketing tool, but I can guarantee you will have barely scratched the surface of all its capabilities.
Pinterest has many features and tools that most users don’t know about, so let me share a few tips and tricks so you can make the most of Pinterest!
1. Use Pinterest as a Visual Search Engine
Just like Google image search, you can upload any image and Pinterest will:
- Identify objects in it
- Show similar items
- Suggest where to buy them
- Provide related outfit/room ideas
So, if you’re trying to find out where someone got their outfit from or find a similar looking piece of home décor, just upload the image to Pinterest and it will tell you all you need to know!
2. Create “Secret Boards"
Want to carry out some research for a secret project? Then you can create secret boards. Simply create the board and then mark it as “private”. You can even invite collaborators.
Secret boards are:
- Completely private
- Don’t show up in searches
- Don’t alert collaborators unless invited
These boards are great for gift planning, personal projects, or mood boards you don’t want public.
3. Tailor your home-feed to see more of what you’re interested in
If you’d like your feed to be more tailored towards your interests, then you can modify it so you can see more of the content you’re interested in. Most people don’t know you can:
- Turn off specific topics that Pinterest thinks you like
- Pause your home feed personalization
- Hide pins to improve algorithm accuracy
To do this, go to “Settings” and then select “Home feed tuner”
4. Reverse-Engineer Trends
Pinterest Trends lets you:
- See what’s rising or falling in popularity
- Compare search terms
- Filter trends by country, season, or audience
Creators use this to plan viral content; businesses use it to time product launches. Incorporate this into your Pinterest strategy and you’re more likely to publish content at a time when pinners are looking for it.
5. Download Full Colour Palettes from Pins
Found specific colours you love and want to incorporate it into your own posts, you can download the full palette from Pinterest!
When you open a pin and click the “…” menu, some images offer:
- Auto-extracted colour palettes
- Suggested matching colours
It makes a huge difference when you finally come across the exact shade you’ve been looking for!
6. Create Sections Inside Boards
Got boards which have so many pins that you can’t find what you need? You can create “sub-folders in that board into “sub-folders,” to better help you organise. This is great for huge collections for a major project.
If you’re planning a home renovation, you can compartmentalise the overall board into separate folders such as:
- Kitchen
- Office
- Bathroom
Or if you’re planning a wedding, you can separate the specifics into individual folders such as:
- Flowers
- Cake ideas
- Décor
This makes it much easier to keep track of your inspiration and ideas for specific projects.
7. See “Related Interests”
Pinterest tracks what it thinks you might be interested in based on the pins you engage with.
You can see and edit this in:
Settings → Home feed → Refine your recommendations
Many users never check this, but it massively shapes your feed, so you’ll see more of the content you want to see and less of what you don’t.
8. Add Notes, Checklists & Links to Pins
You can turn your Pinterest account into a mini planning tool!
You can attach private notes, checklists and URLs to any pin you save.
This also makes it easier to remember why you saved certain pins!
9. Collaborate With People Without Sharing Your Whole Account
If you’re working on a project with someone, you can invite them to collaborate with you on a single board all without them seeing your other board.
This comes in very handy for planning weddings, trips, home projects or even photoshoots.
10. Track Your Saved Pins Performance (Even for Personal Accounts)
If you convert to a free Pinterest Business account, you can see:
- Who engaged with your pins
- Impressions & saves
- Audience demographics
- Trend predictions
Most users don’t know business accounts cost nothing and don’t require a company.
11. Import external content.
You can connect your Instagram account, RSS feed and even bulk upload pins. This makes auto publishing content a lot easier making it easier to post consistently. Connect external accounts to auto-publish content to Pinterest, or upload a file to bulk create products, videos or images.
Importing products through uploading your catalogue or connecting your shopify account will help you create “shoppable” pins which makes the buying process even easier!
Refining your Pinterest account in this way means it works harder for you and you’re going to see more of the content that you’re interested in.
